Hi everyone I want someone that could help guide me. I am looking to move to Makkah with my family next year if things go to plan. I have been there on pilgrimage a few times but never lived there. I would like to know how hard is it to get a visa to live there. I don't want to work there as I can sustain myself from my business in the UK, I would just like to live there so I can volunteer in the mosque and spend my time in doing good. I wanted to know if this is possible and would I be able to buy a property or do I have to rent a property to live there? I believe where there is a will there is a way so I know someone can help me in this and advise me what to do.

Thank you

Hello! I wish you all the best with your plans to move to Saudi Arabia with your family. Living there may be quite different from your previous experiences there, and this includes the visa process. Normally, an expat would have a sponsor when applying for a visa for Saudi Arabia. These are mainly in the case of expats with jobs in place where their employer can be their sponsor and assist with applications for visas and work permits for Saudi Arabia. For more on this, I would suggest you read the Expat Arrivals page, Visas for Saudi Arabia. Have you contacted the nearest embassy for more information?

Most expats will rent in Saudi Arabia, and accommodation may also be arranged by an employer. In your case, that may be different. Have you read our guide to Accommodation in Saudi Arabia? There you will find links to pages on accommodation options in other cities too. It seems there are restrictions on buying property in Mecca, though other cities are more open to this option. Are you familiar with the services on relocation companies?

All the best.
