Hello, my family and I plan on moving to the Philippines. Can anyone advise on the medical facilities available in the country? Is private healthcare in the Philippines of a high standard? I have read that the cost of living is relatively low in the Philippines, and even private medical care can be reasonable. However, I think when travelling abroad, insurance is a must. Will international health insurance be accepted or must I invest in a local policy? I am also curious as to whether specialised treatments are available or if insurance which covers medical expatriation is recommended.

The medical facilities in the Philippines are of a high standard, more so in the private sector. Public sector healthcare is variable, however. You will also find better healthcare facilities in the major cities and urban areas like Metro Manila. I've found the Expat Arrivals Healthcare in the Philippines page quite helpful in giving an overview to this. The Philippines is known to produce many well-trained doctors, and a whole range of medical services are available, from standard consults to specialised treatments.
As for health insurance, most expats working in the Philippines enrol with PhilHealth through their employing company. PhilHealth entitles you to free and subsidised public healthcare. However, not all procedures are covered by this insurance. So, even if you are covered by PhilHealth, we recommend getting private medical insurance. International insurance is accepted in the Philippines, but do check if the insurance company specifies particular treatments or hospitals in the region. Some expats go to Singapore or Hong Kong for specialised medical treatment, and so if this is the case for you, it's best to get cover for medical evacuation.
