Are there any English expats recently arrived in Malta.  Going through the rules and regulations, none of which fit our circumstances exactly is confusing.  We are looking to retire to Malta and would appreciate any comments and advice anyone could give us.

Hi Jax,

Which rules and regulations are you referring to? Is this regarding visas? If so, have a look at the 'residence permits' section on the Visas for Malta page as everything is laid out clearly and in detail. If you're still unsure, feel free to get back to me and ask more questions. Apart from that, you may find it useful check out the rest of the Malta guide, too.

Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns!

Hi M

No, it's not about visas.  One important question is the matter of the finances.  The rules specify that to retire, you must be financially self-sufficient.  We have done our sums and can manage quite happily but there is a minimum limit you have to spend if you wish to buy or rent a property and live without being a burden to the country.  We have looked at suitable accommodation for us which don't reach that limit and based our calculations around that sort of level.   Is there any flexibility?  Are there other options?  Or is our only choice to give up on a dream?

Ah, I see. As this is quite a nuanced query I would say it's probably best if you consult with an immigration lawyer who can delve into the fine print. Best of luck to you, I hope all turns out well.
