Hi Expat Arrivals,
My partner and I are moving to Malawi and we've read that malaria is a big issue there. Although some people say we should be fine and not to worry, we'd like some info on healthcare in Malawi. Should we be worried about malaria and getting sick from other diseases? What can we do to prevent getting sick and what can we do for treatment?

Malaria is an issue in Malawi, but don’t let this scare you or make you anxious for your health. With a proper understanding of what to do, you will be well prepared. Before leaving your home country, it is advised to go for a doctor’s check-up, find out if any existing vaccinations are up-to-date and you can be advised on any preventative medication you can take against malaria and other illnesses.
Malaria is caused by malarial mosquitoes and so the way to prevent getting malaria is to prevent mosquitoes from getting to you. Certain areas are more prone than other areas. Mosquito nets, insect repellents amongst other measures may be recommended.
The hospitals do not meet western standards of healthcare. However, healthcare professionals have a lot of experience dealing with malaria and illnesses that are common to Malawi and can treat them.
