Greetings!

My name is Ryan. I work online and can live anywhere. I am a US citizen. I am interested in moving to Greece. Most of the info out there I have found talks about having to get a job there first. I am wondering if someone could explain to me how I can move to Greece and rent an apartment in say Athens.

I do not intend on working in Greece.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Ryan, Greece is a fantastic place to move to. Do you know anyone who has relocated to Greece before, or who lives there? It seems like you've already done some research on work permits and immigration processes, and you are correct, one of the most common types of work visas in Greece requires a prospective employer's input. However, other options are available, especially as more and more people are working online and freelancing, and can work from almost anywhere in the world. Have you contacted the nearest embassy or consulate for advice? They will likely be the most helpful, and guide you with the latest info and processes. You can also check out the Expat Arrivals page on Visas for Greece. How long do you wish to stay in Greece?

If you're looking for info on renting a place in Athens or leases in Greece, have you seen this page on Accommodation in Greece? It seems that tenancy agreements and leases have typically been at least three years, but shorter periods are negotiable. Your best bet would be a Greek- and English-speaking real estate agent, and by starting your search through basic online property portals.

Hope that helps? Feel free to drop any other questions, comments or even follow ups when you find a solution!
