Hi, we are planning a move to LA, we have 2 girls aged 5 and 7, we have a good life in the UK in a large 5 bed house, at great schools, but we are looking for a more outdoors lifestyle in better climate - i.e. we are dying for daily blue skies.

The focus is good schools, a nice neighbourhood that won't kill me on rent, a decent sized house +3500 sq feet (ideally with a pool but not total necessity)

Then there is the biggie - we both run a family business and healthcare costs look crippling, any advice from expats that have their own business that can advise on this? thanks

Hi dkillinger

Have a look at our Areas and suburbs in Los Angeles page for more about the different types of neighbourhoods.

Our Education and schools in Los Angeles page is quite extensive in detailing the different types of options available, as you'll have to decide on sending your children to a public, private or international school.

In terms of Healthcare in Los Angeles, we advise expats to take out private insurance, so it would be best to shop around and find the package that best suits your family's needs.

Kind regards,
Alex

Many thanks indeed do you know much about visas for people coming that are self employed? i.e. we run a business in the UK that we feel we can progress more in the US...

Hi dkillinger

Unfortunately as the visa process can be very complicated and subject to change, I would urge you to contact your embassy for more information about visas. Slef-employed visas may be difficult to get, as people usually need a sponsor in the US.

Kind regards,
Alex

As far as schools LA has many options to offer. The best website to check the school ratings is http://www.greatschools.org Beverly Hills has 4 amazing public schools. The only requirement is to be the resident of the area where the school is located. and within that area you can choose a place to live: either to rent or buy. and with that I can certainly help you!
