Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen who has been living abroad for 10 years.

I went to French High school and Cegep in Montreal and then English University. My wife is German.

I have 3 kids between the ages of 6 and 11; they speak no French.  I would like to return to Montreal, but would like for the kids to go to the english school board. Is this possible?

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

It's difficult to say – as you're a Canadian citizen, this increases your chances that your children will be eligible to attend one of the English public schools in Montreal. However, the legislation is quite complicated and the fact that their education thus far has taken place outside of Canada may be an issue.

That said, according to the Québec education website your children may be eligible if you, as the father of the children "did the major part of [your] elementary studies in English in Canada" or if you "attended school in Québec after August 26, 1977, and could have been declared eligible for instruction in English at that time". This FAQ page may also be of help. It also provides instruction on how to get in touch with local public school boards. This would probably be the best course of action.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
