How to find a job in Turkey?

Expert Info

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Destination: Turkey

Moving with husband to Istanbul later this year and wondering if I can find a job and work even though I won't have a formal work permit. I'm a writer and blogger and have read that those English speaking expats that can't find jobs in Turkey manage to do just fine by translating things, editing and doing online writing - can anybody confirm or deny?

I am in the process of relocating my family to Johannesburg, South Africa for a 2 year contract. Although excited about the positives of living there, we are still very concerned about the safety aspect. Crime is clearly a problem - but how bad is it, how wil it effect my wife and children's lifestyle? Any advice, feedback or personal experiences?

I'm nearly on my way to the land of noodle dishes and sex tourism and was wondering what the protocol is for taking a taxi in Bangkok? Are the rickshaw looking things safe? How are fares charged? Do you tip drivers? Any other recommended ways of getting around Bangkok?

Expat-heavy areas in Bahrain

Expert Info

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Destination: Bahrain

Dear All

I am a little nervous about my upcoming trip to Bahrain (I'll be working and living there for a year, and my family can't make the trip with me).

I'm worried I'll find the culture a bit alienating, and am scared of getting lonely all by myself!

Are there any expat-heavy areas in Bahrain, that I can request to be moved into?  I'd dearly like to meet up with some friendly, like-minded people as quickly as I can.

With many thanks

Moving to Nairobi - what are the best areas to live for expats?

What areas should I look at in Nairobi as I set up base for two years? I want a nice residential area, with other expats around, not too far from the city, but in pleasant leafy surrounds. In other words I want it all! Thanks...

Taking the Tube in London

Expert Info

Destination: London
I've been hearing horror stories about people getting pushed under the Tube during rush hour in London. I'm a small-town gal about to make the move, so taking public transport and not commuting a la private vehicle will be change in itself - can any expats living in London share some Tube tips - namely which stations to avoid if you aren't into near-death experiences.

Is it easy making friends in NYC?

Expert Info

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Destination: New York City
Moving with my boyfriend - "the American" to New York City in two months. I can barely bring myself to buy boxes let alone imagine leaving my friends and family. Are there any British expats who could give any advice about making friends in Manhattan. I've heard the people are nasty, brutish and short; which sounds pretty much like London, so I'm not intimidated - I'm just wondering how to meet that first person and get the social circle growing. Thanks!

Do I need to buy a car in Vietnam?

Destination: Ho Chi Minh City

I'm considering teaching English in Vietnam next year and I'm wondering if it's necessary to buy a car for the duration of my stay - should be roughly a year. I've read that Ho Chi Minh City Transport is fast-paced and difficult to master if you don't speak the language...can anyone give me a little info about getting around (efficient and economical methods welcome...)

Questions about banking in Zambia

Expert Info

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
Destination: Zambia

There's a possibility I may be briefly relocated to Lusaka, Zambia for six months. It's a short amount of time so I don't think it's worth it to open a bank account, and I'll still be getting paid South African Rand into my South African Bank Account. I just want to know from expats living in Zambia if there's enough ATMs and if they accept VISA in most places.
