I am excited about moving to India but am aware that there will be challenges and difficulties given how different life there is likely to be. What are some of the main issues other expats to Indian have had to deal with?

Get ready for a lot of bureaucracy: you need to get a Foreigner registration, visa extensions, etc, and it all takes plenty of time. Also: India is hot - very hot sometimes and humid and few expats are actually prepared for living in a sauna. There are also mosquitoes and the power supply is not always constant. And the standard of hygiene is much lower than what you are used to! Don't get me wrong though - I love the adventure of living here!

It can be tough being confronted with extreme poverty at close quarters on a daily basis. Most westerns consider poverty as being on welfare - here there is no welfare!

HI! Having experience working with expats and being an expat myself... India indeed is an adventure, and to be honest has a lot of challenges in everyday living. You have to be on your toes all the time to get things done. But if you prepare yourself mentally for all the "challenges", it will certainly make you stay more pleasant and you can really enjoy India for it's many fascinating "colors". There is so much to love about India... you just have to have the right perspective :) Wish you all the best! If you need help with moving, visa etc. let me know...be more than happy to get you info.

India is definitely a challenging place to live in. the living conditions are not up to the standards of the western countries. However, with time, and the right networks, India can prove to be a land of opportunities. The people in India are increasingly becoming western, in terms of tastes and preferences. Therefore, the opportunities available for a westerner is abundant. This can only be achieved when you are ready to face challenges like hygiene, transportation, language differences and dense population.
